EL CURSO ES PRESENCIAL Y SE IMPARTE EN MADRID
PRESENTATION
Bioanalytical Chemistry is a valuable CV subject. The goal of bioanalysis is to provide reliable data to explain what is going on with disease, drugs, food/nutrition, athletic performance or crime. During the course, the first step is to define the biological system and how it is to be provoked or how it reacts in a particular treatment or environment. That will be focused mainly in pre-clinic assays. The second step is the knowledge of the updated analytical techniques (LC, LC-MS, GC-MS, CE) with their strengths and drawbacks. The third step is the validation of the analytical methodology and, finally, a brief introduction to the metabolomic approach will be presented.
The course is addressed to graduates in pharmacy, biology, chemistry or medicine with interest and/or experience in in vivo research or R&D in pharmaceutical companies.
Undergraduate students who have successfully completed a general course on Analytical Chemistry can also obtain an enhancement of their education in a promising area.
GOALS
The goals of this course are for the attendant to
- develop good problem-solving and critical thinking in drug metabolism, pre-clinical drug metabolis studies and bioanalytical chemistry (mainly separation sciences),
- understand the practice of method validation, and
- introduce the fundamentals of metabolomics
so that they will be able to operate effectively in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical R&D lab in industry
METHODOLOGY
Teaching at the interface between analytical chemistry and biology offers the opportunity to address many of the complexities inherent in modern analytical chemistry while applying them to interesting biochemical or biomedical topics.
Methodology would be laboratory-based, case study-based and lecture-based promoting active learning.
Focus will be on one of the largest activities for bioanalytical chemistry, the area of drug discovery and development, the goal being to ensure that pharmacological mechanisms are understood and data obtained during the process are reliable. Topics include chromatography (HPLC, GC and their coupling to MS) and capillary electrophoresis, method validation and an introduction to metabolomic tools.
MODULES
I. DRUG METABOLISM FOR DRUG DISCOVERY
II.INTRODUCTION TO BIOANALYSIS
III.ADVANCED CHROMATOGRAPHIC SCIENCES IN BIOANALYSIS
EVALUATION CRITERIA
Attendance to > 75% of lectures and to all the practices is required.
Each module will be evaluated through the active participation in the activities (40%) and a final exam (60%).
